Depending on the type of business and purpose of using chatbot, you may – or definitely need to – import a huge amount of content into your chatbot and keep them updated from time to time. That’s why BotStar has a built-in CMS to effectively manage a huge list of products in different categories.
Previously, you had to manually input your information in CMS, or using our API. But today, migrating content to BotStar CMS gets a thousand times easier with our CSV import feature.
To be specific, you can now use a CSV (comma-separated values) file to import a large number of products and their details at one time, with a few simple clicks. Chatbots can tap into this “bank of data” and display this information to customers during the conversation.
This can be helpful if you’ve just switched to BotStar, or if you want to upload products by using a spreadsheet, into your BotStar chatbots.
1. Set up your CSV file
To get started, you’ll need to set up your CSV file so it can be uploaded to BotStar’s CMS. Follow these rules to ensure your data is imported successfully:
- Separate data by row
- Separate data by column.
- Name the columns
- All data must be presented in text format and saved in a single, uncompressed file.
Here’s an example of what the file should look like:
Note – Prepare your images
A CSV file can only contain text. So you need to make sure all product images are converted into a Url before uploading them to your CSV file, and to BotStar.
It could be the link to your product images on websites or other online stores. Or you may consider using other image hosting services to generate image Urls and have one column in your file for those image URLs.
2. Adding New Products to BotStar CMS using CSV files
Once you’ve got your content in that CSV, just head over to your BotStar account, open your CMS and:
- Create a new CMS Entity, or
- Select an existing CMS Entity
Then click the Import button in your CMS Entity. Well now you can. Just drag the file into the window or select it from your computer.

Upon the file being passed to BotStar, you’ll then find two options:
- Overriding – replacing all existing items or
- Appending – adding new data while keeping current CMS items.
3. Mapping data in CSV files to BotStar CMS.
Once your file has finished uploading, it’s time to map where data (in the CSV file) should go in BotStar CMS.
To be specific, you need to map between Entity fields and File fields.
Review your import, then click the Import button and it’s good to go. Easy as pie.
Obviously, CSV import in CMS is such a useful tool for moving content between content management systems. Any time you have content in a spreadsheet that needs to make it to your chatbot, it’ll come in very handy.
